This publication presents monthly information on sales of new motor vehicles in each state/territory in original, seasonally adjusted and trend estimated terms. The original data are sourced from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. Sales data are available for passenger vehicles, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), other vehicles and total vehicles at the state/territory and national levels.
JUNE 2005 KEY POINTS
Trend
The June 2005 trend estimate (82,387) for the sales of new motor vehicles decreased 0.3% over the May 2005 estimate. When compared with June 2004 (78,805), the trend estimate increased 4.5%.
In June 2005, decreases were recorded in the trend estimate for sales of new passenger vehicles (-0.1%) and sport utility vehicles (-2.0%) compared with May 2005, while sales of other new motor vehicles increased (0.3%). Compared with June 2004, increases were recorded for sales of all vehicle types, with passenger vehicles recording the largest increase (5.8%).
Most states and territories recorded decreases in the trend estimate for sales of new motor vehicles in June 2005 compared with May 2005. The Australian Capital Territory (-1.9%) and New South Wales (-1.4%) recorded the largest decreases while, the Northern Territory recorded the largest increase (1.3%) over the same period.
Seasonally adjusted
The seasonally adjusted estimate for sales of new motor vehicles for June 2005 (81,914) recorded a decrease (-0.3%) over May 2005. When compared with June 2004 (79,269), the seasonally adjusted estimate increased 3.3%.
Decreases were recorded in the seasonally adjusted sales of new passenger vehicles (-0.4%) and sports utility vehicles (-1.3%) in June 2005 compared with May 2005, while sales of other new motor vehicles increased (0.7%). This is the fourth consecutive month that sales of sports utility vehicles have recorded a decrease.
Most states and territories recorded decreases in the seasonally adjusted estimates for sales of new motor vehicles in June 2005 compared with May 2005. The Australian Capital Territory (-3.2%) and New South Wales (-2.3%) recorded the largest decreases, while the Northern Territory (9.7%) and Tasmania (8.4%) recorded the largest increases.

The percentage change of 3.8% was chosen because the average absolute percentage change over the last 10 years has been 3.8%.
